When to see a GP online, and when to go in person

Some problems can be dealt with in an online consult. Others need a doctor to examine you in person.

What works well online

  • Colds, flu, sinus and urinary tract infections
  • Repeat scripts for stable, ongoing conditions
  • Rashes and skin complaints you can show on camera
  • Mental health, where talking it through needs no examination room
  • Sick notes, referral letters and second opinions
  • Going over blood test or imaging results

For these, an online consult saves you the trip and the time in a waiting room.

When you should be seen in person

  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, or anything that feels like an emergency. Call 10177 or 112 and do not book anything.
  • Injuries that may need stitches, X-rays or a physical examination
  • Abdominal pain that is severe or getting worse
  • Anything where the doctor needs to touch, listen or measure

When in doubt

If you are not sure, book an online consult.
